National BAME Youth Survey

Summary: In March 2010, in response to the high levels of youth unemployment in Britain, particularly amongst BAME groups, Roots coordinated a youth survey that was designed and conducted by unemployed young people. The focus of the research was to explore the issues unemployed youth face with regards to employment. It also sought to equip the young people with valuable research and communication skills to enhance their CVs and employability prospects.

Five unemployed 18-24 year olds from BAME backgrounds were recruited from four cities: Liverpool, Sheffield, Leicester and London. They were each given research training – by Edge Hill University – to design and conduct the survey via focus groups in their respective cities.

Through their series of focus groups across London, Liverpool, Sheffield and Leicester, the young researchers consulted with over 50 unemployed BAME 18-24 year olds. Each researcher shared their findings and recommendations, which were integrated into one final report – due to be disseminated to government bodies and relevant policy makers.
