Deal will mean public runs Leicester community centre

Summary: An agreement is to be signed to enable a community centre to be run by the public.

The city council and Highfields Community Association (HCA) are to sign a deal to give HCA a long-term lease on Highfields Centre, in Melbourne Road, and control of its staff and budgets. The council will still run early years, youth and adult skills and learning services from the centre.

Councillor Culdipp Bhatti, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "This is a real opportunity for people to have a greater say on how services are provided. We are confident HCA will develop innovative services, and public funding has been underpinned with an agreement to ensure services provided are the best."

City council leader Veejay Patel said: "This is a major step forward in letting people have more of a say in how services are developed and provided."

Furzana Khalifa, secretary of HCA, said: "We look forward to working with the city council and other partners in making a difference to the range and quality of the much-needed services to our communities."
