Cuts spell hardship 'for a generation of young people'

Summary: Government cuts to youth services will leave a generation of disadvantaged young people facing long-term hardship, according to the latest report by the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS).

NCVYS has updated its report released in October last year called ‘Comprehensive Cuts: Report on funding changes in the voluntary and community youth sector’, after a raft of further cuts to young people's services and grants such as the scrapping of the education maintenance allowance.

The report says that the cumulative effect of such measures, including cuts to council youth service budgets, will cause long-term harm to a generation.

NCVYS chief executive Susanne Rauprich said: "By failing to take a comprehensive view of the cumulative impact that the cuts agenda places on young people we are risking unintended consequences that could in the long-term prevent a large number of young people, and in particular those that are already disadvantaged, from realising their true potential."

NCVYS is now looking to resurrect the principles of its Youth Impact Assessment, which had support from within the Liberal Democrat party before the election but has not been picked up by the coalition government. This aimed to ensure that all new policy took into account its effect on young people.

Rauprich said the organisation wants to stage a "cross departmental youth summit to gather key ministers together in order to formulate a cohesive approach to young people’s issues across departments".
