Charity Commission consults on its spending cuts

Summary: The Charity Commission has launched a consultation on how it should cut its spending by a third.

This comes after the government’s announcement that its budget would be cut from £29.3 million to £21.3 million by 2014/15.

The consultation asks whether:

  • The commission should adopt a light-touch approach to registering charities

  • It should investigate charities only where large amounts of money are at risk

  • It should stop giving one-to-one advice to individual charities.

The consultation also asks what risks the voluntary sector will face in the next five years and which services respondents expect the commission to provide.

This is the first stage of a review process by the Charity Commission and the changes will be place from May 2011.

For more information on the consultation, which closes on 14th January 2011, visit www.charitycommissionreview.blogspot.com.
