Building a social recovery

Summary: In this 'first year report card' on the Coalition Government the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) gives it eight out of ten for its efforts to end welfare dependency and applauds plans to incentivise work by introducing universal credit and to involve charities and private firms in retaining the unemployed.

However the CSJ is critical of the Government’s plans to cap benefit payments at average annual household income of £26,000, stating that this will bring hardship to some 50,000 large families. CSJ recommends a phasing in of the benefit cap particularly as the large families affected will face an ‘overnight’ average projected loss in benefits of £93 a week.
