Sex Discrimination Act 1975

The SDA applies to women and men of any age including children in England, Wales and Scotland and prohibits sex discrimination against individuals in the areas of employment, education and the provision of goods, facilities and services and in the disposal or management of premises. It also prohibits discrimination in employment against married people.
The SDA prohibits direct and indirect discrimination. There are special provisions about discrimination on the grounds of gender reassignment.
Following a decision on discrimination against transsexuals brought before the European Court of Justice under the Equal Treatment Directive, the SDA has been amended so that discrimination on the grounds gender reassignment is one of the types of discrimination to which the act applies.
