'Is Big Society Big on Equality?' Conference - 23rd March
Summary: A national conference for equality and human rights practitioners working in the English regions.
This event is being run by the English Regions' Equality Network (EREN), 10:45am - 3:30pm (Registration at 10am) at Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, 108 Stamford Street, London SE1 9NH
Big Society, Localism and a reduction in public spending mark a significant change in the environment in which the equality voluntary and community sector now finds itself in.
- What are the real life stories of how front line voluntary and community equality organisations are furthering equality in the Big Society?
- What are the impacts of the cuts on equality communities and how are they consequently working in this challenging environment?
- What are the recommendations from a local and national perspective on how to make Big Society equal?
- What does the Localism Bill and the Equality Act mean for the local equality organisations?
This conference will bring together front line equality organisations from across England with policy makers to provide a space for sharing ideas and recommendations on how to ensure Big Society has equality at its heart. A range of front line equality VCS organisations will deliver engaging presentations on their progress with the Big Society agenda highlighting achievements, opportunities and challenges.
Jonathan Rees, Director-General, Government Equalities Office and Professor Richard Wilkinson, Co-author of The Spirit Level and Founder of The Equality Trust will be giving key note speeches as well as taking part in the panel discussion with the following experts: Amanda Ariss, Chief Executive, Equality and Diversity Forum; Max Wind-Cowie, Head of the Progressive Conservatism Project, DEMOS; Anna Coote, Head of Social Policy, new economics foundation; Daniel Fluskey, Policy Officer with a focus on Local Government, National Council for Voluntary Organisations.
