De Montfort University to host hustings for Leicester mayoral hopefuls - 18th April

Summary: Voters are being invited to a hustings - giving them the chance to quiz candidates hoping to become Leicester's first directly elected mayor.

De Montfort University, in association with the Leicester Mercury, will host the event – Elected Mayors: The Big Debate – at its campus on April 18. It will be chaired by university vice-chancellor Professor Dominic Shellard.

The role of the mayor elected on May 5 will be different to that of the city's Lord Mayor.The post-holder will replace the council leader but have extra powers, including being able to select the cabinet.Nominations for the post close on April 4.

Colin Copus, De Montfort's professor of local politics, said: "Encouraging voters to make the most of their chance to make a difference is vital for democracy and this mayoral election is history in the making."

To attend the event, at the university's Hugh Aston building, at 6.30pm, on Monday, April 18, register an expression of interest.
